How To Grow Your Social Media for your PMU Business
Advertising your services and utilising your social media profiles is a huge pain point for many permanent makeup artists, especially those who are newly qualified and just starting out in the industry. Launching your business page with 0 followers can be incredibly daunting and growing your socials can seem overwhelming or even impossible at times.
In this blog we have collated some of our top tips for growing your social media presence and reaching more potential clients. Social media marketing is one of the cheapest, easiest, and most effective ways of advertising your business and your PMU services! Meaning that growing your account is key to reaching a bigger audience, increasing your bookings, and making your business a long-term success.
Be ACTIVE and CONSISTENT on your socials
Starting with an obvious one… if you want new potential clients to find you, you need to be active and posting on your social media. The key here is consistency! Big gaps between posts or periods of no activity are detrimental to your account and your business if you are trying to reach new clientele through social media.
An easy way to ensure you stay consistent is to develop a posting schedule and stick to it. You need to be posting at least 2-3 times a week, or more if you have time. IG stories can be utilised daily and your activity on your account is equally as important as your posts – that means replying quickly to DMs and comments.
Struggling to create enough content for your schedule? Don’t forget that every appointment you have is an opportunity to source more content! See our top tips from Sponsored Artist Sarah (Owner of Blush and Blade Academy) here.
Ensure Your Content Provides Value
When you are creating your content, always put yourself in your client’s shoes and ask, ‘what do they want to see on my page?’. If you are using your social to increase bookings, your focus should be on results. Not only immediate results after treatment but before and afters, healed results, colour-boosts, healing process… the more variety the better!
Showcasing different treatments, styles, skin types, hair colours, genders, ages – this will all help your followers learn more about your services and may spark an interest in a treatment for themselves. This also helps to show off your skill level and the results you can create on all different types of clients.
Don’t Be Humble!
This is your page, so don’t worry about being humble or playing down your skills and expertise. If you have created a stunning result on your client, take lots of photos and videos and show it off on your page. Shout it from the rooftops about the gorgeous results you can create with your skills!
If you had to overcome a difficulty in the treatment e.g. a tougher skin type, a complicated colour match - include those details in the caption and showcase how you overcame this to create beautiful results. This will show any future clients that you are knowledgeable and an expert in your field, meaning that even nervous clients will feel like they are in safe hands.
Create Video Content
It is no secret that Instagram loves video content and boosts this up the algorithm… and the biggest social media platform in the world is TikTok, which is entirely video based. So that means video content will play a huge part in your content creation and social media marketing strategy.
A great way to optimise your video content is to spend time researching what does well on your chosen platform or platforms currently. At any time, there will be trending audios on Instagram or TikTok that you can use to accompany your reels to boost views and engagement.
You can also take inspiration from other creators, whether that be for transitions or other eye-catching video ideas. Staying in the loop on social media will allow you to create the most engaging content for your page. As always, you need to ensure that all videos (and photos) are taken on a good quality phone camera and are well-lit. Dark, blurry and poor-quality content is a huge no if you’re trying to grow your account!
Show Your Face
Yes, we mean showing yourself on your account! Talking on your stories, sharing selfies and bits and pieces about you as a person. You wouldn’t believe the impact this can have on the success of your channels and your business.
To put it simply, people want to buy from people – not from a faceless business page. By showing yourself on your accounts, your potential clients can get to know you prior to the treatment and by the time their appointment comes around, they can feel like they already know you.
This can seem scary, especially if you are a newbie and there is always a concern about people you know seeing your stories/content and making fun of you. One thing we always say is that, even if this was the case (however unlikely), these people are not paying your bills! Forget what other people think and prioritise your business and your success – it is 100% worth it.
Optimise Your Profile
This one is so simple yet so many people forget to do this! You need to ensure that your bio includes all the information a potential client needs to know if they are considering booking in. That should include your name or business name, the services you offer, your location (!) and any relevant links.
If you have a website or an online booking system (this is SO useful) you can link directly to those, or to any other website or account that is relevant to your business. If you have won any awards, this can also be a great addition to your bio – and it shows your customers your level of skill, experience, and your official recognition in your industry.
Don’t Be Shy – Get Involved with the PMU Community
If you work solo, PMU can sometimes be a lonely place! That is why we always encourage any artist to get involved in the PMU community and connect with other artists. This should be both in-person at events and digitally through your social media.
The PMU industry is extremely supportive, and we see so many artists on social media following each other, as well as engaging with and supporting their fellow artists. Social media is a great place to learn new tips, stay up to date with all the latest product launches plus any engagement is great for your social media presence.
The more engaged your followers are, the bigger your account can grow! So, get involved and start building new connections not only with future clients but with your fellow artists.
If You Are Struggling… Invest in Professional Assistance
Content creation and social media account management is not quick or easy… so it is completely understandable if you struggle to keep up with this alongside your day-to-day job. Especially for artists who work full time and are busy with clients, it can seem like there are not enough hours in the day.
In these instances, it could be worth investing in professional assistance through a social media expert, freelance marketer, business coach or an agency. Or if you are struggling with the digital marketing side of your business, working with a professional even just temporarily can help you to learn new skills and build up a bank of content to use in the future.
There are some individuals or companies who work specifically with the beauty industry or even PMU artists. Do some research and ask your colleagues who they would recommend, and you’re sure to come across someone who can help you!
