The Killer Beauty Guide to PPE Equipment
Here at Killer Beauty, we understand the importance of prioritising client safety, so before permanent makeup artists embark upon their career, it is paramount that they know about the health and hygiene requirements within the industry.
Blood borne pathogens is an essential qualification that needs to be completed before new artists can begin their training, and this course highlights the risks of infection and cross-contamination in microblading and micropigmentation.
Why is PPE equipment important?
PPE has always been a basic requirement within PMU so as to maximise safety for both artist and client. Much like in healthcare settings, PPE is used during PMU treatments to create a barrier and to prevent any bacteria or droplets reaching the client’s skin.
By investing in high-quality PPE, you can significantly reduce the risks of droplet infection and cross-contamination between clients, maximising their safety and lessening risk of complications following the procedure.
What PPE equipment do PMU Artists need?
When it comes to establishing a good hygiene standard, it is paramount that you invest in high quality personal protective equipment (PPE), like what we sell here at Killer Beauty. Here we’ll cover just some of the PPE equipment that every PMU artist should be using to protect themselves and their clients during treatments.
Gloves
Gloves must be worn at all times when delivering treatments for optimum protection, and artists must change gloves between each client (disposing of the used pair safely, of course).
Finding the right size for you is crucial, as gloves that are too big can compromise grip, control and can allow bacteria to get inside, whilst gloves that are too small can rip easily. If you do notice any worn areas or tears, you must stop the procedure, change your gloves, and wash/disinfect your hands immediately.
Hopefully, the likelihood of this happening is very slim when you use the correct size and high-quality gloves like the ones we stock here at Killer Beauty. Glove sizes range from XS, S, M, L to XL to ensure a comfortable fit for everyone, especially for female technicians with smaller hands who may have struggled previously to find gloves that fit properly.
Masks
Face masks must always be worn during procedures and need to cover the nose and mouth fully to prevent the spread of any droplets. Artists have the option of disposable, paper masks or reusable masks – depending on their preference. If you do prefer reusable, we would always suggest opting for those with a changeable filter to ensure optimum hygiene within the clinic setting.
For PMU artists who find traditional masks difficult to work with, we also supply mouth shields and face shields which may be more comfortable. Designed to be non-restrictive, our Killer Beauty Face / Mouth Mask features a plastic shield that won’t impede air flow.
These options are also lip-reader friendly, which is great for any hard of hearing clients and can help improve communication so you can put your client completely at ease.
Aprons
At Killer Beauty, we stock Disposable Aprons which can be worn during treatment and disposed of correctly between each client. Alongside the disposable options, we also stock hugely popular reusable Killer Beauty Aprons, for any eco-conscious artists looking to reduce their plastic waste.
One thing you may not already know is that we sell disposable arm sleeves which can be used in conjunction with aprons to further protect your clothing and skin from both cross-contamination and pigment spillages.
When carrying out a treatment and stretching the skin where required, you forearm is more likely to be near the client’s face and the treatment area, so these offer an extra layer of protection.
Hair Nets
During treatments, artist’s hair should be tied back but if you prefer, you can invest in some disposable hair nets and headbands. You may use these on yourself, on clients during the procedure or both if you want! Not only do they prevent cross-contamination, but hair nets and headbands also keep hair back off the client’s face - this prevents any stray hairs getting in the way whilst you are working.
Alongside the above items we also stock lap cloths and client drapes to protect both yourself and the client while a treatment is carried out. Similar to the other disposable items, these are to be changed and disposed of in your clinical waste between each client to ensure optimal hygiene practices.
There you have it! Our blog all about the importance of PPE and good hygiene practices in permanent makeup settings, which should always be a top priority for all PMU artists.
It is crucial to always maintain a hygienic, safe work environment to make sure that your clients are never at risk of complications following a PMU treatment and we think you’ll agree that personal protective equipment is one of the most vital components of every treatment.
