Behind the Brands

If you’re a PMU artist that’s only just heard of Microbeau and Perma Blend, then you’ve been missing out! These two giants of the industry make some of our favourite PMU supplies - while Microbeau creates high quality machines like the Bellar series and the supplies that power them, Perma Blend has only recently branched out from making incredible pigments into introducing its first ever machine, the Perma Pen.

Combine Microbeau and Perma Blend, set them on the task of creating the ultimate multi-use permanent makeup machine, and that’s how you get the Perma Pen Signature!

What Powers the Signature?

As so many PMU artists turn to wireless machines, it’s no wonder that the Perma Pen Signature capitalises on that trend with this fully wireless piece.  All the power you need for up to 5 hours of work comes from the PowerBolt Mini, a wireless battery pack that anyone who’s experienced Microbeau or FK Irons wireless tattoo machines will know and love!

For those of you who have only worked with wired PMU machines, here’s how the PowerBolt Mini works. This wireless battery pack is charged through a USB-C connection on the top of the pack, even when it’s connected to the machine, and you can channel that power from 5 up to 10 Volts.

The front of the battery pack is where you manage the power essentials. There are just three buttons to keep things simple - a large central power button, and up and down arrows. Just above the buttons there is a colour LED.

In normal running mode, the LED will display the same colour as the voltage shown in the squares to the left of those three buttons, with a blinking light meaning that you’re on a half voltage (ie 5.5 Volts). You can also use it to check the battery charge level and to indicate different menu options, like adjusting LED brightness and putting the machine into Travel Safe Mode.

How Does It Feel?

Having a good voltage range is important, but one of the most vital details when you’re looking into permanent makeup machines should be how they’ll feel in your hand - after all, that’s where it’ll be for most of the day!

The Perma Pen Signature is made from aircraft-grade aluminium and weighs 120 grams, which is a little bit more than machines like the Perma Pen at 88g and the Microbeau Bellar Air at 110g, but less than old favourites like the Stigma® Force Wireless (125g) and the Microbeau Spektra Flux S (170g).

However, the Perma Pen Signature doesn’t have any wires connected which can pull down on your handpiece or affect the feel of the machine while you work, which makes up for the additional extra grams in weight!

It has a comfortable grip that tapers from 26 down to 19mm, with grooves for a more secure handhold - of course, when barrier wrapping the machine you may well want to add a little extra to that diameter with grip wrap. It’s completely up to you!

With its proprietary motor which boasts extra low levels of vibration, accuracy is increased and the strain on your hand throughout the day will be lessened - and it’ll be a nicer, less noisy time for you and your client!

What Treatments Is It Suitable For?

The stroke length for the Perma Pen Signature is fixed at 2.7 mm, which is generally considered a medium stroke - it’s perfect for building smooth layers of pigment in brow and lip treatments, with a lighter hand needed for work on the delicate lip tissue, as well as intense pigment implantation.

This stroke length may be too small to create strong lines in a single pass, of the type needed for individual hair strokes, but the entry level for this kind of stroke length tends to be much higher anyway - a benefit of the Signature’s medium stroke length is that it’s great for beginners. And with the adjustable needle depth, the more you learn, the more precise you can make your work!

We were lucky enough to catch our incredibly talented Pro Artist Natalie Della-Verde from Bad Girl Brows as she created flawless ombre brows on a melanin-rich client at the UK PMU Conference using the Perma Pen Signature. Watch our sneak peak here - and if that’s not proof of what this machine can do, we’re not sure what is!

So in short, the Perma Pen Signature is great for PMU artists at all stages of their career who specialise in lip and brow treatments, and want to experience the freedom of a wireless machine from the most trusted brands!
